Lesson 6: Short U Vowel

Objectives:

The students will:

  1.        Be able to identify the short U vowel.
  2. Be able to identify what sound the short U vowel makes.
  3. Be able to orally express what sound the short U vowel makes.
  4. Be able to identify multiple words that have the short U vowel in them.

 

Materials:

  1.          Computer/Projector
  2. Chart Paper
  3. Short U Vowel Poem (See Lesson 6 Extras).
  4. Sticky Notes
  5. Plain Paper

Domain: Print Concepts

Standard 1. Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print.

a. Follow words from left to right, top to bottom, and page by page.

b. Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters.

c. Understand that words are separated by spaces in print. d. Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet.

Domain: Phonological Awareness

Standard 2. Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).

d. Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds (phonemes) in three-phoneme (consonant-vowel-consonant, or C VC) words.* ( This does not include CVCs ending with /l/, /r/, or /x/.)

Domain: Phonics and Word Recognition

Standard 3. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

a. Demonstrate basic knowledge of one-to-one letter-sound correspondences by producing the primary sound or many of the most frequent sounds for each consonant.

b. Associate the long and short sounds with common spellings (graphemes) for the five major vowels.

 

Anticipatory Set:

The students will then be introduced to the short U poem and asked to repeat it with the teacher until they seem to understand what sound the short U vowel makes. The students will then give a brief show and tell of the items they brought in that have the short U vowel in them.

Procedures:

  1. The teacher will hold a short discussion about what that student think about the short U vowel (What sound do you think the short U vowel makes? Can you think of any words that have the short U vowel in them? Can you say the sound of short U vowel?)
  2. The teacher will then introduce the short U vowel poem followed by having the students recite it as a group.
  3. The teacher will then ask the students who brought in an item with the short U vowel in them to show it to the group.
  4.  The teacher will then explain each center that the students will be going to for the day. Each day the students will participate in a different center until the end of the week.
  5. The students will then complete their assigned center for the rest of the time allotted.

Assessment:

The teacher will be able to use the homework assigned to bring in an item to determine if the student understands what the sound short U vowel makes. The teacher will also be utilizing the end results from each center to further understand how the students are grasping the short U vowel.
